How to Check Your Resume ATS Score for Free

A step-by-step way to check your resume ATS score for free, read the results, and fix what matters. No signup needed, works with DOCX, PDF or text.

By SwitchWithAI Team — Career tools, ATS workflows, and job-search research

You are about to send your resume to a job you actually want. Before you do, it is worth five minutes to find out whether the software on the other end can read it.

That is all an ATS check does, and you do not need to pay or create an account for it. This guide shows you how to check your resume ATS score for free, what to upload, what to paste, how to read the result, and what to fix first.

What you need before you start

  • Your resume file. The real DOCX, PDF or TXT you plan to send, not a screenshot or a copy pasted from somewhere else.
  • The job description (optional but useful). Open the posting on Naukri, LinkedIn or the company's careers page and copy the whole text. This lets the checker compare the job's language with yours.
  • Five minutes.

Step 1: Open a free ATS checker

Go to the free ATS resume checker. It works without an account, and your resume is read for the check and not stored.

Be wary of any "free" checker that asks you to sign up first, then shows the score blurred until you pay. A genuinely free check should show you the findings before asking for anything.

Step 2: Upload the file, don't just paste text

Upload the actual file when you can. Here is why it matters:

What you give itWhat it can check
Uploaded DOCX, PDF or TXTLayout and file-format risks (tables, columns, text boxes, images), reading order, and everything below
Pasted text onlySections, content, dates and keywords, but not how columns, tables, fonts or graphics will actually parse

If you paste text, you will get useful feedback on content. If you want to know whether your two-column design survives, you need to upload the file.

Step 3: Add the job description

Paste the full posting into the job description box. Without it, the checker still reviews parsing and structure. With it, you also see how many of the job's repeated terms your resume already covers and which are missing.

Use the real posting for the job you are applying to. A generic description tells you very little.

Step 4: Read the findings, not just the number

The headline score is a summary. The useful part is the list underneath. On our checker the line items are:

  1. Contact details are in the body text. Parsers sometimes skip headers and footers.
  2. Section headings a parser will recognise. Experience, Education, Skills, Projects.
  3. Dates written one way throughout. Mixed formats can scramble your employment history.
  4. Results stated with numbers. Outcomes beat duties.
  5. Bullets open with what you did. Strong verbs first.
  6. Length is in a sensible range. Not too thin, not a wall of text.
  7. Language overlaps with the job description. Only when you supply one.

Anything marked as a failure is the place to start. A warning is worth a look. A pass needs nothing.

Step 5: Fix the mechanical problems first

Fix problems in this order, because each one can hide the next:

  1. Anything the parser could not read. Text in images, text boxes carrying names or titles, scrambled reading order in columns.
  2. Missing or unusual section headings. Rename them to the standard ones.
  3. Date formats. Pick one and apply it everywhere.
  4. Contact details. Move them out of the header into the body.

Only then work on wording. If you are not sure how to avoid the usual traps, our guide to resume formatting that survives parsing lists the five habits that cause most failures.

Step 6: Re-check, then stop

Run the check again after each round of fixes. When what remains are judgment calls, not mechanical faults, stop. A resume that scores in the 80s with specific, honest results will beat a resume tuned to 100 with nothing to say. We cover why in what is a good ATS score.

What a free check cannot do

Be clear about its limits so you do not over-trust it:

  • It cannot know an employer's private screening rules.
  • It cannot promise an interview, however high the score.
  • It cannot tell you whether your story is persuasive. That part is yours.

Treat the check as a way to remove avoidable problems before a human ever sees your resume.

After the check: tailor the resume to the job

A clean file is the starting point. The next step is making the resume speak to the specific role. That means using the posting's words where, and only where, your experience supports them.

You can do this by hand. Our guide on finding the right resume keywords in a job description shows how. Or you can let SwitchWithAI do the rewriting inside your own DOCX, keeping your fonts and layout, adding nothing you have not done, and showing every change so you can accept or reject it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really check my resume ATS score for free?

Yes. The free ATS checker needs no account and no payment. You upload your resume or paste its text, optionally add a job description, and read the findings. Your resume is read for the check only and is not stored.

Should I upload my resume or paste it?

Upload the file when you want layout and file-format checks, because pasted text cannot show how tables, columns, fonts or graphics parse. Pasting is fine for a quick content and keyword check.

Is a job description required?

No. Parsing and structure are checked without one. Add a job description when you also want to see which of the posting's terms your resume already supports and which are missing.

How often should I check my ATS score?

Check before you send any important application, and again after you edit the file. A resume that read cleanly last month can break when you paste in a new section or switch templates.

What is the best file format for an ATS?

A standard DOCX or a text-based PDF with real selectable text. Avoid scanned images, and avoid layouts where key information sits in tables, text boxes or graphics.
