How to list skills
Four rules for the skills section.
Skills are where an ATS looks first for the words in a job post. These rules keep yours readable to software and to people.
01
Use the job post’s words
Recruiters search applicant lists for the exact names in their post: "Power BI", not "PowerBI"; "Tally", not "accounting software". Write each skill the way the job writes it.
02
List only what you have used
Every skill on the page can come up in the interview. A project or internship that used it is the best proof, so mention the tool in that bullet too.
03
Tools first, then methods
Put the tools and languages a job names (Excel, SQL, Figma) before broader methods (data analysis, user research), and keep soft skills for your bullets.
04
Skip ratings and bars
Skill bars, stars and percentages are invisible to an ATS and mean little to a person. Plain text, separated by commas or in a short list.
Soft skills, and how to show them
A list of soft skills proves nothing on its own. Show each one in a bullet instead:
- Communication. Name where you used it: presenting a project, writing reports, handling customers.
- Problem solving. Pair it with one problem you actually solved, in a project or internship bullet.
- Teamwork. Say what your part was in a group project, a club or a fest.
- Time management. Show it with a deadline you met while juggling college, a job or an internship.
- Attention to detail. Best shown by the resume itself: no typos, consistent dates and formatting.
Every job is different
The right skills change with each job post.
These lists are a starting point. Each posting asks for its own mix, so check your resume against the job you are applying to, and tailor it: we add the job’s words only where your experience backs them up, and keep your layout exactly as it is.

Resume skills questions
What people ask about the skills section.
What skills should I put on my resume?
The tools and methods the job post asks for that you have actually used, written the way the post writes them, such as Excel, SQL, Tally or Figma. Start with the role's list on this page, keep only what you can talk about in an interview, and add the ones a specific job asks for.
How many skills should a resume have?
Usually 8 to 15. Enough to cover what the job asks for, few enough that each one is believable. A long list of every tool you have heard of makes the true ones harder to spot.
Should I list soft skills like communication?
Show them instead of listing them: a bullet about presenting a project, leading a club or handling customers proves communication better than the word does. Keep the skills section for tools and methods.
Do skill bars and ratings help?
No. An ATS cannot read a bar or a star rating, and a recruiter cannot tell what 80 percent of Excel means. Write skills as plain text, separated by commas or in a short list.
Where do these skill lists come from?
From SwitchWithAI's role library, the sample job postings our ATS checker scores resumes against, one per role. They show what posts for each role commonly ask for. Every real posting has its own mix, so check your resume against the job you are applying to.
Should my skills change for each job I apply to?
The ones you lead with should. Each posting names its own tools, and recruiters filter applicants by those words. Tailoring your resume to each job puts its words forward wherever your experience backs them up.
