Fresher Resume in India: What to Write When You Have No Work Experience

The hardest part of a first resume is the blank space where work experience is supposed to go. Most freshers fill it with an objective statement, a long list of hobbies and a declaration at the bottom. None of these help you get shortlisted.

What does help is evidence: things you built, studied, organised or fixed, described precisely. This guide walks through a fresher resume one section at a time.

The order that works for freshers

For someone with less than a year of experience, use this order:

1. Name and contact details
2. A two-line summary
3. Education
4. Projects
5. Internships and training, if any
6. Skills
7. Achievements, certifications and positions of responsibility

Education comes early because it is your strongest credential right now. Projects come before skills because they prove the skills.

Keep it to one page. A fresher resume that runs to two pages is almost always padded.

Contact details: less than you think

Include your name, phone number, a professional email address, your city, and a LinkedIn or GitHub link if it has real content.

Leave out date of birth, father's name, religion, marital status and a photo unless the employer specifically asks. They take space and are not relevant to whether you can do the job.

Replace the objective with a summary

"Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation" tells the reader nothing. Write two lines about what you can do and what you are looking for instead.

Before: "To obtain a position where I can utilise my skills for the growth of the organisation."

After: "Computer science graduate with two full-stack projects in React and Node.js, including a deployed attendance app used by my department. Looking for a junior developer role."

The second version names skills, proves them with a project, and says what role you want. That is all a summary needs to do.

Education: include the details that matter

For each qualification, list the degree, college, university and year, plus your score if it is good. Many Indian employers still screen on class 10 and 12 marks and graduation scores, so include them if they meet common cut-offs such as 60 percent or 6.5 CGPA.

Add relevant coursework only if it connects to the role, for example "Coursework: data structures, database systems, operating systems" for a software role.

Projects: your work experience for now

This is the most important section on a fresher resume. Treat each project like a job:

• A name and one-line description of what it does.
• The tools you used, stated plainly.
• Your contribution, especially in a team project.
• A result: who used it, what it improved, or what you learned that you can show.

Before: "Made a library management system using Java."

After: "Built a library management system in Java and MySQL for my college library, handling issue and return records for about 2,000 books. Designed the database schema and wrote the search module."

Only include numbers you actually know. If you do not know how many people used something, describe what it does instead of guessing.

College projects, final year projects, hackathon entries, freelance work for a relative's shop and personal projects all count. A small project you can explain in detail beats a big one you only watched.

Internships and training

List internships like jobs: organisation, role, dates and two or three bullets on what you did. Even a four-week internship is worth including if you can describe a real task.

For courses and certifications, include ones that are relevant and recognised, such as NPTEL, a cloud provider certification or a well-known online course with a project. A long list of short certificates does less than one course with a project you can show.

Skills: be specific and honest

Group skills so they are easy to scan:

• Languages: Python, Java, SQL
• Tools: Git, Excel, Power BI
• Frameworks: React, Django

Only list what you could answer interview questions on. Skill bars and percentage ratings ("Python 80%") do not mean anything to a recruiter and some ATS software cannot read them.

Achievements and positions of responsibility

Include things that show initiative: organising a college fest, leading a club, a hackathon result, a scholarship, or a strong rank in a competitive exam. One line each, with what you actually did.

"Coordinator, college tech fest" is fine. "Coordinated a team of 12 volunteers for a two-day tech fest with 400 participants" is better, if those numbers are true.

What to leave out

• The declaration ("I hereby declare that…").
• Hobbies, unless they are genuinely relevant or distinctive.
• References, or "references available on request".
• Soft skills listed alone, like "hard working" and "quick learner". Show them in your project bullets instead.

Format it so software can read it

Use a simple single-column layout, a standard font, clear section headings and a DOCX or text-based PDF. Avoid tables for layout, text inside images, and fancy icons for contact details. Our guide on formatting that survives parsing covers this in detail.

Tailor it for each application

Even a fresher resume should shift slightly for each role. A data analyst application should lead with your SQL and dashboard projects. A developer application should lead with the app you deployed. Reordering projects and adjusting your summary takes ten minutes and noticeably changes how relevant you look.

Frequently asked questions about fresher resumes

Should a fresher resume be one page?

Yes. With less than a year of experience, one page is enough for education, projects, skills and achievements. A second page usually means the content needs editing, not more space.

Should I include class 10 and 12 marks on my resume?

In India, yes, if they are reasonably strong. Many employers use them as a screening criterion for freshers. Once you have a few years of experience you can remove them.

What if I have no projects at all?

Build one small project related to the role you want and describe it honestly. Until then, lead with education, relevant coursework, internships, training and positions of responsibility.

Is it okay to use a resume template?
