Fit Before Polish
No amount of rewriting fixes a role you are not a candidate for.
Check whether you are a candidate before you work on sounding like one.
Separate the two problems
A weak fit is a positioning problem. A weak resume is a writing problem. Polishing your way out of the first one does not work.
Read what is missing, not the score
One missing requirement you can argue around is very different from four you cannot. The count matters less than which ones.
Spend effort where it moves something
An hour on a role you are genuinely close to beats an hour on a role that needs a career you have not had yet.
Before
A role asking for 5 years, team leadership, and a domain you have never worked in.
After
A role asking for 5 years, team leadership, and a domain adjacent to yours.
Both look like a stretch on a checklist. The first requires an experience you cannot argue toward; in the second, the adjacency is the argument. Same gap count, completely different application.
Do this before moving on
Take the last role you applied to and list its requirements you cannot evidence. For each, write one sentence arguing around it. Any you cannot write is a real gap, not a wording problem.
